ABLP FAQ’s

What is Bay Lobster?

The Bay Lobster™ is a species of tropical slipper lobster found in Australian Waters. Australian Bay Lobster Producers has trademarked the brand name “Bay Lobster”, however, the species goes by many other colloquial names such as Moreton Bay Bug, ABLP have trademarked the name Bay Lobster as a differentiation point between the many other species of slipper lobsters.

There are 90+ species of slipper lobster found throughout the world, 5 of which are closely related (Genus Thenus) and have a similar appearance to the Bay Lobster™.

By adopting the trading name "Bay Lobster™" exclusively for the specific species, Thenus australienis, within the market, ABLP effectively reduces ambiguity and confusion surrounding our product. This ensures that consumers readily recognise and associate the Bay Lobster™ brand with the distinctive attributes of the sole species it represents. By differentiating our product from other “Moreton Bay Bugs,” we can instil confidence in our customers by emphasising the superior quality, size, and appearance of the Bay Lobster.

The use of the common name “Moreton Bay Bug” may elude to one of 5 species of the Thenus genus, as well as commonly mistaken, the Balmain Bug. With multiple of these species being imported into Australia from overseas, caught, handled and transported under sub-par conditions, it is important that the Bay Lobster is not collectively grouped with these to maintain is high-quality reputation.

The larger size, vibrant colour, fantastic eating quality and locality are all attributes that support ABLP’s decision to exclusively specialise in the sourcing, sale and production of the Bay Lobster.

Our raw/green prawns and bugs are treated with a preservative (metabisulphite) to prevent spoilage and discolouration. This preservative is also used in wine, beer and some dried fruit as a preservative.

International scientific committees and FSANZ have thoroughly investigated the safety of sulphites and concluded that for most people sulphites are safe. However some sulphite-sensitive people, many of whom also have asthma, may react to sulphites with allergy-like symptoms.
